The ACS 1000 family of drives, one of the most successful
variable speed drives in its class, provides simple and reliable
power control.
|
Power control of induction motors
Drawing from over a century of industrial manufacturing
experience, ABB provides a simple and reliable approach to
power control: the ACS 1000 family of drives for speed
and torque control of 315 to 5000 kW induction motors for
voltages of 2.3, 3.3, 4.0 and 4.16 kV. It is available with
air or water cooling.
The air cooled drive can be supplied with separate input trans-
former (ACS 1000) or as a fully integrated drive (ACS 1000i) which includes input transformer and, optionally, input contactor.
Operational experience
With over one thousand installations worldwide, the ACS 1000 family is one of the most successful variable speed drives in its class.
Since its introduction in 1997, it has set the benchmark for
reliable and efficient control of medium voltage applications |

The ACS 2000 is designed for high reliability, easy installation
and fast commissioning reducing the total cost of ownership.
With the integration of an Active Front End (AFE), line side
harmonics are minimized without the use of expensive, spe-
cialized transformers and with the added benefit of regeneration
and power factor correction.
With its compact footprint, the ACS 2000 can be retrofitted
to control standard induction motors via a direct connection
to 4.0 – 6.9 kV line supplies (direct-to-line). Alternatively, the
ACS 2000 can be operated with an input isolation transformer
to allow for flexible line side power voltages. It is available with
an integrated transformer or it can be connected to an external
two-winding transformer.
The ariable speed drive system with the benefits
of Voltage Source Inverters (VSIs), including excellent avail-
ability and reliability, high and constant power factor and
superior dynamic control performance.
The heritage of ABB’s VSI topology, along with a patented
IGBT-based multi-level control, provides a proven track
record for reliable and motor friendly medium voltage AC
drive solutions. ACS 2000 direct-to-line combines the cost savings of a

| ACS 5000 |
| |
|
The ACS 5000 is a medium voltage, variable speed frequency converter
for low and high power induction and synchronous motors. The converter
is equipped with one or two inverters depending on the required output
power.
The ACS 5000 is based on a 5-level (9-level phase to phase) Voltage
Source Inverter (VSI) topology without series or parallel connections of
power semiconductors. Therefore it is the least complex, most robust and
most efficient medium voltage frequency converter that is available on
today's market. The resulting quality of output voltage and current allows
the use of standard motors. Even the retrofit of existing direct-on-line
(DOL) motors is possible.
The ACS 5000, like other frequency converters of the ABB medium
voltage drive family, uses an advanced and proven power semiconductor
switching device known as IGCT. The IGCT is a highly reliable semicon-
ductor based on well-proven thyristor technology. Low parts count, lowest
losses and high reliability, combined with comfortable design margins
result in best possible reliability and availability.
Thanks to the fuseless converter design, the ACS 5000 does not require
any power fuses which are known to be unreliable, costly and subject to
aging.
ABB's award-winning control platform Direct Torque Control DTC
provides the best torque and speed performance ever achieved in
medium voltage frequency converters. Control of the frequency converter
is immediate and smooth under all conditions.
